Andrographis (Andrographis
paniculata) is an
Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicinal herb. Andrographis has been
found to be an effective anti-biotic, anti-viral and immune
stimulant. It is a "Winter" herb which has strong heat clearing actions.
Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata) is commonly used in China, India and
various southeast Asian countries. Both the fresh and dried leaves, as well as
the fresh juice of the whole plant have been used in a variety of traditions.
Andrographis is known as chuan xin lian in traditional Chinese herbalism, where
it is believed to affect the digestive, cardiovascular and urinary systems. It
is commonly used as a wintertime
herb.
Andrographis is being increasingly used as favorable effects for
colds. Reasonably good
evidence tells us that it can reduce the severity of cold symptoms. It may also
enhance beneficial effects colds. The key constituents of andrographis are thought to be a
group of diterpene lactones, including andrographolide, neoandrographolide,
deoxyandrographolide, and deoxydidehydroandrographolide.
Side Effects
Gastric distress and loss of appetite have been noted when the herb is taken
in large doses.
Recommended Dosage
Take 1 (400 mg) tablet twice daily for no more than 10 days at a time, or as
recommended by your health care professional.
