What is Policosanol?
Policosanol, part of the Cholesterol Rescue™ family of products, is a blend of compounds isolated from natural plant waxes. Policosanol is derived mainly from sugar cane and wheat germ oil Policosanol contains several long chain fatty alcohols, including
octacosanol, hexacosanol and triacontanol. Numerous clinical studies have shown that these compounds may support the cardiovascular system and inhibit lipid peroxidation as well as support macrophage activity. It is also an effective antioxidant and has several other benefits.

Long chain Fatty alcohols The main long-chain alcohol in policosanol is the 28 carbon 1-octanosol, and next most abundant is the 30 carbon 1-triacontanol. Other long-chain alcohols present in much lower concentrations are: 1-docosanol (C22) 1-tetracosanol (C24) 1-hexacosanol (C26) 1-heptacosanol (C27) 1-nonacosanol (C29) 1-dotriacontanol (C32) 1-tetracontanol (C34) These long-chain alcohols are soluble in water and solid waxy substances. Collectively they are known as fatty alcohols. Its use as a supplement has been proven in numerous clinical experiments to lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase good cholesterol (HDL) more effectively and safely than prescription statin drugs. Policosanol is a unique natural product derived from sugar cane wax and beeswax. It has proved effective at reducing cholesterol levels and for some individuals may be a reasonable natural alternative to the commonly prescribed statin-type
cholesterol-lowering drugs. The mechanism of action of reported cholesterol-lowering activity is unknown. Some animal studies suggest that policosanol may inhibit cholesterol syntheses in the liver. It is also unclear if the putative cholesterol-lowering activity is due to octacosanol. The long-chain alcohols appear to have different unique biological activities, and octacosanol by itself may not have the same activities as policosanol. They may work synergistically. How does Policosanol Work? Policosanol appears to work by inhibiting the body's synthesis of cholesterol. It is also shown to
enhance maintain normal cholesterol production in the liver, and to promote normal LDL-cholesterol uptake by the body's tissues. It has been proved from the clinical studies that Policosanol does not inhibit the HMG-CoA enzyme, but it may inhibit a different enzyme. What makes Policosanol exciting is that it has other actions against heart problem in addition to lowering cholesterol. Policosanol and Cholesterol Policosanol has shown the ability to reduce cholesterol levels tremendously. In 1994 a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted on 22 patients with hypercholesterolemia. After eight weeks, it had observed the patients who were taking policosanol had shown remarkable reduction in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (21). A similar type of study was marked performed on 69 patients, with comparable results. The group of patients taking 10mg of policosanol daily for two years had an 18% reduction in total cholesterol and a 25% reduction in LDL cholesterol (22). Notably, after 12 months, the so-called good HDL cholesterol was raised up by 21%. Policosanol seems to be effective in reducing cholesterol on both men and women, and all age groups. Benefits of Policosanol: Reduce cholesterol levels Promotes Cardiovascular Health Effective antioxidant Inhibit lipid peroxidation Support Macrophage Activity Works to Beneficial Effects LDL oxidation Policosanol may Beneficial Effects and reverse atherosclerotic lesions and thrombosis. Recommended Dosage: Two (2) tablets, in the evening, for the first three months. Thereafter, 1-2 tablets daily. It is recommended that a minimum of 15 mg of coenzyme Q10 be taken daily per each tablet of policosanol. Precautions: If taking anti-platelet medication, such as daily aspirin, consult your health care professional before using this product. Not for use by pregnant or breastfeeding women. Keep out of the reach of children. |
